Soldier Adopts Dog That Saved His Life

While serving in Afghanistan, U.S. military combat dog Layka was shot four times by the enemy at point-blank range. Despite her injuries, she still attacked and subdued the shooter, saving her handler and the other members of the team. Seven hours of surgery and the amputation of one leg saved her life. Her handler, Staff Sgt. Julian McDonald, fought hard to adopt her and she’s now become a part of his family.

Rick Ansell says:

Staff Sgt McDonald mentioned that the US Army catalogues these dogs as 'Access Equipment'. Having worked with British Army equipment lists (I'm a Civilian working for the UK MoD) I can say that we don't – they are Animal, Canine, <Whatever their job is>, as in 'Animal, Canine, Arms and Explosives Search'. Horses are 'Animal, Equine', just like Staff McDonald would be 'Staff Sergeant, Marine, Dog Handler'. What might happen however is that they could be listed under 'Role Equipment' for a unit, along with items like 'Kennel, Air Conditioned' and 'Body Armour, Animal, Canine' (its been quite a few years since I worked with equipment lists so those last heading etc. are a bit bogus, but the sense is correct).
